This is one of the most frustrating things women experience during menopause.
Your body is genuinely changing in ways that make weight gain almost inevitable if nothing else changes, even when your diet stays exactly the same.
The main driver is estrogen.
As estrogen declines, your body starts storing fat differently,
particularly around your abdomen.
This is partly protective, because fat tissue can produce small amounts of estrogen, so your body is essentially trying to compensate.
The result is that weight that used to sit on your hips and thighs starts moving to your middle, even at the same calorie intake.
At the same time, muscle mass naturally decreases with age and hormonal change.
Less muscle means a slower metabolism, which means your body burns fewer calories at rest than it used to.
The diet that maintained your weight at 40 simply doesn't work the same way at 50.
Insulin sensitivity also shifts during menopause, meaning your body doesn't process carbohydrates and sugar as efficiently as it once did.
This can lead to blood sugar spikes and crashes that drive cravings, increase fat storage, and make it harder to lose weight even when you're eating well.
Cortisol plays a role too.
Poor sleep, which is extremely common during menopause, raises cortisol levels, and elevated cortisol encourages your body to hold onto fat,
particularly around the middle.
The good news is that this is not permanent and it is not inevitable.
But it does mean your approach needs to change.
What worked before probably won't work now, and generic dieting advice is rarely designed with menopausal hormones in mind.
A personalised approach that looks at your specific hormone picture, your blood sugar regulation, your gut health, and your lifestyle patterns makes a real difference here, because the drivers are different for every woman.
