Waking at 2am and lying there for hours is one of the most exhausting parts of menopause, and it happens for very specific reasons,
none of which are just stress or getting older.
The most common driver is the drop in progesterone that happens
during perimenopause and menopause.
Progesterone has a natural calming, sleep-supporting effect, and as levels fall,
that protective quality disappears.
Falling asleep is often fine, it's staying asleep that becomes the problem.
Night sweats are another major disruptor.
Even if you don't fully wake drenched, your body temperature fluctuating through the night is enough to pull you out of deep sleep and into wakefulness,
often right around that 1 to 3am window.
Once you're awake, cortisol often kicks in earlier than it should.
Cortisol is your waking hormone and in a well-regulated body it
rises gradually toward morning.
During menopause this rhythm can change, with cortisol rising too early and making it almost impossible to drift back off.
The 2am mind spiral that follows, the worrying about work, the kids, the state of everything, is a consequence of being awake in a state of mild physiological stress, not the cause of the waking itself.
Your nervous system is already activated before the thoughts begin.
Alcohol makes this significantly worse.
Even one or two glasses of wine in the evening disrupts the
second half of your sleep cycle,
which is exactly when menopausal women are most vulnerable to waking.
Addressing sleep during menopause means looking at all of these layers together, hormones, body temperature, cortisol rhythm, gut health, evening habits, and nervous system regulation.
There is rarely one single fix,
but there is almost always a real solution when the full picture is looked at properly.
If broken sleep is affecting your work, your mood, and your quality of life, this is exactly the kind of thing we work through in the Menopause Map.
