Why are my hot flushes so intense and is there anything that actually helps?

Hot flushes are the most recognised symptom of menopause,

but that doesn't make them any easier to live with,

especially when they're coming every hour or arriving without warning in the middle of a meeting, a dinner,

or while you are standing at the supermarket checkout.

The intensity varies enormously between women, and there are several reasons why some women experience hot flushes far more severely than others.

The core mechanism is a change in how your brain regulates body temperature.

As estrogen declines, the hypothalamus, which acts as your body's thermostat, becomes more sensitive and starts triggering heat-release responses at much smaller temperature changes than before.

The result is a sudden surge of heat, sweating, and often a racing heart,

followed by chills as your body overcorrects.

Several factors make hot flushes more frequent and more intense.

Stress and elevated cortisol are significant triggers, as is poor gut health,

blood sugar instability, excess weight around the middle, alcohol, caffeine, and spicy food. Smoking also increases frequency and severity.

Women who undergo surgical menopause or chemotherapy-induced

menopause often have more intense flushes

because the hormonal shift is sudden rather than gradual.

The good news is that hot flush frequency and intensity really can respond to the right interventions, and there is solid evidence for a number of natural approaches including specific herbal medicines, dietary changes, targeted supplements, and lifestyle adjustments that support the hypothalamus and reduce the triggers.

What works varies between women, which is why a personalised

approach makes such a difference.

A plan built around your specific symptom picture, your triggers,

your health history, and your blood work will always outperform a

generic supplement from the health shop.

If your hot flushes are disrupting your sleep, your work, or your confidence,

you don't have to put up with it.
