How long does menopause last and does it ever get better?

This is a question I'm often asked,

usually when women are in the middle of a

particularly rough patch,

and the answer is yes, even if it doesn't always feel that way.

Menopause itself (from a western perspective) is technically a single moment,

defined as twelve consecutive months without a period.

What most women experience as menopause is actually perimenopause,

the transition leading up to that point,

which can begin anywhere from two to twelve years before periods stop.

The average age periods stop in New Zealand is 51,

so perimenopause can begin in the early to mid forties for many women.

During perimenopause, hormones fluctuate unpredictably,

which is often why symptoms can feel so erratic.

Some weeks feel manageable, others feel overwhelming, and it can be hard to know what to expect from one month to the next.

After menopause, hormone levels stabilise at a new lower baseline.

For many women, symptoms do ease significantly in the years

following their final period.

Hot flushes typically reduce in frequency and intensity over time, sleep often improves, and the emotional volatility tends to settle down.

However, that does not mean symptoms end,

it means they change as we move into the postmenopausal years.

Vaginal dryness, changes in libido, joint discomfort, and

changes in energy can keep persisting.

Metabolic health starts to become more important as cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure rise without the support that estrogen gave them.

This is why the postmenopause years benefit from the same attention

and care as our perimenopausal years.

The most important thing to understand is that how you move

through this transition is not out of your hands.

The severity and duration of symptoms is significantly influenced by your overall health, your gut function, your stress levels and your nutrition.

Women who get personalised, properly targeted support generally

move through these years more comfortably

and come out the other side feeling better than they expected.

If you're in the middle of it and wondering if it will ever get better, it will,

especially if you take the time to support your body through it.
