Yes, it's completely normal and I think it's one of the least talked
about parts of the whole experience.
The physical symptoms get most of the attention,
but this identity shift that comes with menopause is very real and
can feel just as disorienting, sometimes more so.
It shows up it in different ways.
Feeling unlike yourself.
Not recognising your own reactions.
Losing interest in things you used to love.
Feeling invisible, or unexpectedly angry,
or becoming aware that you have spent decades putting everyone
else first and now have no idea what you actually want.
A common comment from women who come to see me is that they
just can't be bothered with anything anymore.
This is not a mental health crisis, although it can feel like one.
It's a combination of hormonal, neurological, and emotional
factors all happening at once.
Estrogen plays a significant role in mood regulation,
memory, and cognitive function.
As levels fluctuate and decline, it's common to experience brain fog,
emotional volatility, low motivation,
and a kind of flatness that feels nothing like your normal self.
At the same time, menopause often coincides with major life transitions.
Children leaving home, ageing parents, relationships changing, career uncertainty,
a sense that time is moving on and the feeling that life
hasn't worked out how you imagined it would.
Many women also find that menopause brings a kind of reckoning.
Life long patterns such as poor boundary setting, people pleasing, self-abandonment and carrying everyone else's weight,
all become harder to sustain.
Feeling like a different person during menopause is common,
but it's not something you simply have to accept.
It is actually a good thing.
The feelings are simply information asking for your attention.
If you want support that addresses both the physical symptoms and the deeper change that's happening, that's exactly what the Menopause Map is built for.
